Becoming a Member of Intersect

What is membership?

Intersect is a not-for-profit, member organisation providing digital research technology products and services to its members and other research-intensive organisations. Membership involves payment of an annual membership fee, in exchange for a package of membership services. The latter typically includes access to the combined skills, expertise, services, and support of the Intersect Services Team through a full-time Intersect employee based on-site at the member organisation; fifteen days of training drawn from the Intersect training catalogue; and access to member pricing for other services provided by Intersect.

Why should I become a member?

Intersect membership is, at its heart, a recognition of the common need for digital research technology and eResearch across all research intensive organisations, and the synergistic value obtained for all members through collectively pursuing enhanced digital research capability. It goes well beyond the payment of an annual fee for a package of services. Membership involves a commitment to creating better research capability for the communal benefit of all members.

Each member can draw on over 50 years of shared, on-campus experience in digital research technology and eResearch; backed by research-specific technical specialists in IT systems, operations, and engineering. This suite of services is optimally delivered through an on-campus professional: a core component of Intersect membership.

What is the process?

The process of becoming a member is governed by the Intersect Constitution and typically involves:

  1. Initial discussions between the organisation seeking membership and the Head of Membership Services of Intersect, to create a shared understanding of the needs of researchers at the organisation and whether membership is a suitable mechanism for servicing these needs.
  2. A Membership Application and Agreement is prepared by the Head of Membership Services and reviewed with the organisation.
  3. An individual with appropriate delegated authority, typically, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Research, or equivalent, signs the Membership Application and Agreement and returns it to the Head of Membership Services.
  4. The Head of Membership Services sends the Membership Application and Agreement to the Intersect Company Secretary, along with a recommendation, for consideration of the Intersect Board.
  5. The Intersect Board considers and approves or rejects the Membership Application and Agreement.
  6. The Company Secretary notifies the organisation of the outcome.

Do I have to be a member to access Intersect services?

No. Intersect offers services on a fee-for-service basis to members and non-members. Typically, members receive access to member exclusive pricing.

Can I negotiate the packaged services or price?

The membership services and associated fees are standard, reflecting a formal resolution of the Board in 2020 codifying its intention to maintain transparency and parity in membership services and fees across the membership.

Can I negotiate the Terms of Service?

The Terms of Service are common to all members. This reflects Intersect’s intention to serve the communal benefit of all members in an equitable and fair manner.

Who do I contact?

Further questions or inquiries about membership should be directed to the Head of Membership Services, Dr Jonathan Arthur (jonathan.arthur@intersect.org.au).
