Research community takes stock of Intersect’s achievements

Prof Stephen Crain, Lyndall Foster and Dr Luc Small at the Intersect Showcase 2011

Research leaders, science agency representatives and departmental heads gathered at the Intersect showcase on 12 September to see and hear how Intersect is helping the research sector conduct its work.

NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer, Professor Mary O’Kane hosted the showcase at the NSW Trade and Investment Centre in Sydney.  Around 80 guests moved between displays, manned by Intersect engineers, showing a range of Intersect developed projects.

Headlining the event were Minister for Finance and Services, the Hon Greg Pearce, MLC; Parliamentary Secretary for Tertiary Education and Skills, Gabrielle Upton, MP and Professor Les Field AM, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), UNSW.

Speaking about research outcomes Intersect has enabled for their research groups were Scientia Professor Ian Dawes of the Ramaciotti Centre for Gene Function Analysis at UNSW; Professor Geraint Lewis from the Sydney Institute for Astronomy at the University of Sydney; and A/ Professor Frans Henskens from the Schizophrenia Research Institute.

“Intersect is helping researchers to forge new research methodologies, new methods of collaboration and is enabling research to be done significantly faster,” Professor O’Kane said. “It is also helping researchers access a bigger pool of resources and reduce duplication across the sector in areas including genomics, schizophrenia research and breast cancer microscopy. That is why the NSW Government is working closely with Intersect. We want to ensure NSW researchers have access to sophisticated IT infrastructures which will support and enhance our research capabilities,” Professor O’Kane said.

HPC for W.I.M.P.S workshop

Intersect is running an “HPC for W.I.M.P.S” two day intensive High Performance Computing (HPC) workshop. The workshop aims to take competent Windows users, who have never used HPC before, and get them up, running and ready to use our HPC systems.

By the end of the course, attendees will be able to send and retrieve data from HPC systems and to analyse that data using the HPC system.

The workshop assumes basic Windows competence (WIMPs = Windows, Icon, Menu, Pointing Device).

At: Intersect Board room
Time: 9.30AM
Date: 17/18 November
First 10 to RSVP to: Batool@intersect.org.au

EPOC clinical management system live

For Macquarie University’s Children and Families Research Centre Intersect configured and deployed a clinical data management system for their 3-year “Exploring Processes of Change” (EPOC) ARC Linkage project. Intersect was involved from grant preparation to project execution. The system is now live and enables the EPOC team to manage the full life cycle of their clinical research project. The EPoC project is a collaboration between the Children and Families Research Centre and Uniting Care Burnside. The project is collecting data from vulnerable and at risk families.

AustLII mobile phone application

In early 2011 the Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII) and Daniel Kiley, of Hessian Apps in Adelaide, produced the AustLII app for iPhone. After the enthusiastic reception of that app, AustLII invited Intersect to work with them to provide mobile access to legal information for users of other popular mobile platforms. This work includes not only developing a cross-platform mobile application but also improving the main AustLII website to better support mobile devices.

The AustLII mobile application will enable lawyers, law students, anyone interested in or working in the law who need access to legal information wherever they are to access legal information from mobile devices by Q4 2011.
