Federation of National Astronomy Datasets

Astronomy Australia Ltd has contracted Intersect to produce a concept design study and a fully costed project plan on the federation of national astronomy datasets. The final report will present an articulated vision of how Australian astronomers will ideally conduct day-to-day data intensive activities in 3-5 years. The aim of federation of these datasets is to maximise the scientific return from investment in facilities and position Australian astronomy as a technology leader.

The project plan will consider what current astronomy data strategies exist today, what needs to be done to expand what exists to cope with the expected future astronomy data-deluge, and, most importantly, how to do it. The plan will be delivered by the first quarter of 2012.

MER Stage 1 complete

The first round of the Securing Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting (MER) Data project is now functional and being deployed. Intersect assisted the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) improve its data management capability for the NSW Natural Resource Monitoring Evaluating and Reporting program. Intersect business analysts and developers worked with the scientists to generate user friendly tools for creating and recording file-naming conventions, standardised project file structures, and file discovery services for MER datasets.

The MER data management tools will make it easier to structure, store and find data; promote dataset discovery and reuse, and enable greater collaboration between scientists. The Office of Environment and Heritage and Intersect are now conducting initial training in post phase 1 development of the project.

HPC Resource Allocation round opens 15 August

The next round of resource allocations for HPC resources is about to start. The call will open 15th August and remain open until 26th August. Allocations will be made for access to both McLaren and NCI facilities for the period from 1st October to 31st March 2012.

Applications can be made online at http://www.intersect.org.au/hpc-resource-allocation. New users, including from smaller institutions, non-traditional HPC disciplines as well as research students, are encouraged to use the HPC facilities.
