HPC for W.I.M.P.S
Intersect has made the first in a series of presentations of “HPC for W.I.M.P.S”: 2-day intensive High Performance Computing (HPC) workshops. The pilot workshop was held at Southern Cross University with a dozen researchers across multiple disciplines in attendance. The workshop aims to take competent Windows users, with no experience on Linux systems, and give them confidence and proficiency at the command line, ready to use our HPC systems. By the end of the course, attendees are able to send and retrieve data from HPC systems and to analyse that data using the HPC system.
Interest in the workshop will see presentations at University of Technology, Newcastle University, University of Wollongong and the University of Western Sydney, with more to follow. If you are interested in having a workshop or want to attend one, contact your eResearch Analyst to organise dates.
UNSW Data Capture & Integration
This project is developing an institutional research data management service to enable capture and management of data from a diverse range of analytical instruments. The project comprises three inter-related sub-projects:
•The UNSW Analytical Centre Data Management Service
•The Membrane Research Environment (MemRE)
•The Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN)
The plan is to allow the pushing of data from one service to another, whilst each sub-project is able to operate independently. MemRE and the ELN are established programs for managing research and data workflows for their specific disciplines. This work will provide additional capacity to these services for data ingestion and export to the Australian Research Data Commons.
Funded by the Australian National Data Service, the project is creating a user-driven service supporting a wide base – initially 10-12 research groups, building to approximately 250 groups.
Collecting the collections
The Metadata Aggregator project will make it possible for University of Sydney researchers to reveal their data collections to other researchers in Australia and internationally, to increase collaboration, and publications. Funded by the Australian National Data Service, the project will deliver these benefits:
• an online interface to the Sydney Research Data Store;
• a mechanism through which Sydney researchers can advertise their research data sets for re-use by others;
• the ability to search for research data by metadata;
• mechanisms through which researchers are able to share their data through specific access permissions;
• access to information on a trove of research data for the international research community;
• time and cost savings by reducing the amount of unnecessary recapture of research data;
• freeing up researchers to focus on research rather than IT;
• assisting the University to meet its obligations under the Australian code for the responsible conduct of research; and
• increasing the University’s competitive advantage as a leading research institution enabling collaborative research.
Strategic Roadmap responses due 22 July
Comments on the 2011 Strategic Roadmap for Australian Research Infrastructure Exposure Draft are due by 22 July 2011.
